Far Ultra Violet imager (FUV) images the Auroral Oval. FUV is a grating-based two-channel spectrographic imager that employs a flight-proven (IMAGE FUV) and a flight-ready design (ICON FUV) to observe the global distribution of auroral emissions, a critical diagnostic of the magnetospheric response to solar wind driving.
One channel detects atomic oxygen (OI) emissions excited mainly by precipitating auroralelectrons (electron aurora) but also by protons; the other observes the Doppler-shifted component of the Hydrogen Lyman-αemission generated by precipitating energetic protons only (proton aurora). The grating approach minimizes the possibilityof contamination byout-of-band emissions (so-called “red leaks”).
